Plans to transform the Lasker facility at the northern end of Central Park were announced in a July ceremony on the shore of the Harlem Meer. Susan T Rodriguez | Architecture • Design with Mitchell Giurgola Architects, LLP are the architects for the new project. Lasker Pool & Rink has provided low cost ice skating, free swimming, and community programming to Harlem and East Harlem communities since it opened in 1963. Faced with the need for extensive and recurring repairs to the existing structure, Central Park Conservancy and the City of New York have partnered to reimagine the facility as one that is more aligned with the mission of the Park, returning the focus of the area to recreation and the experience of nature. The new design will establish a state-of-the-art facility that is integrated into the topography and accessible to all. The design incorporates a watercourse that will reconnect the Harlem Meer to the Ravine through Huddlestone Arch, creating increased opportunities for recreation and re-establishing a threshold to the North Woods.
